In much of the English-speaking world, napping needs a defense. It's framed as a sign of age, of laziness, of a late night you didn't handle well. The classical advice was to protect the Heart at this hour: eat lightly, avoid argument, avoid heavy exertion. And rest.
A short sleep at the Wu hour was understood not as laziness but as literally nourishing the Heart, giving the Shen a chance to step back from the world's demands.
There's a practical layer too. The midday sun in an agricultural society is brutal, and working through it in summer is how you get heatstroke. A rest after the noon meal wasn't just medicine; it was the only sensible way to structure a day of outdoor labor. The habit got reinforced by everyone from farmers to emperors, and it hardened into culture.

The difference is hard to describe until you've felt both in the same afternoon and noticed that one of them leaves you still able to sit still.

Caffeine's half-life is five to six hours, which means a 3 PM coffee is still circulating at 9 PM, quietly degrading your sleep even if you feel fine at bedtime.
